Free Video Dub

Free Video Dub is a great program for simple video editing.  I used it to edit a mov file in place.  It is free ware.  Just be careful when installing.  Choose the custom install and uncheck all the browser plugins and other additional software you may not want.

f.lux

f.lux is a program that will dim your display for night time viewing.  It is better than the "Adjust screen brightness" setting in Windows 7 for laptops. You can use Alt+PgDn or Alt+PgUp to dim or brighten the display beyond your daily setting and then it returns to its regular brightness in the morning.

Here are some other keyboard short cuts

Adware Removed!

There is so much free software available on the Internet. The thing to remember is to not do the standard install for anything.  Many times there is adware piggy packing in the installation.  It is how some free software pays for itself.  If you choose a custom installation you can usually find the option that says "install X software too".  Just de-select it and keep the software you want.

I think this is how I must have gotten the search.conduit.com toolbar, plug-ins or whatever else they added to my computer.  In Firefox and in Internet Explorer, every time I opened a new tab, it would bring up their search page.  I tried finding a solution to uninstall it manually.  I don't generally trust ad-ware removal programs.  There are some that are ad-ware disguised as removal tools.

After not succeeding in find a manual solution I used Adware-Removal-Tool-v3.5.exe from http://www.techsupportall.com/how-to-remove-conduit-search/.  It seems to have worked great.

After I used this tool, I uninstalled the conduit search keeper program. Rebooted, then changed the home page for Internet Explorer.  I then re-ran Adware-Removal-Tool-v3.5.exe and rebooted. When I opened IE, I tried to look at the search engine ad-ins.  It notified me that the registry for search providers was corrupted and that IE was going to reset them back to the default settings.

How to get decimal lat lon in Google Maps Preview

Here is how you get decimal latitude and longitude from the latest update of Google Maps.

Click on a place and it will pop up the little info card including the lat/lon in degrees/decimal minutes.  Click on the lat/lon and then click the directions icon as if you were going to get directions to it. It will convert the lat/lon into decimal degree format.

How to Put a PDF File in My Blog

From eHow

I used http://freepdfhosting.com/ to upload the PDFs and then followed the instructions from eHow.  This is better than using Google Drive because Google does not provide a direct link to a pdf.  You have to view it from the Google viewer.

Open Office Quick Reference

Here is a quick reference for things I use in MS Word that I want to use in OpenOffice.org Writer

Hyperlink - Insert -> Hyperlink - is has no keyboard shortcut and cannot customize it to use Ctrl+K
  Edit -> Hyperlink

Assign hot key to a function. Tools -> Customize -> Keyboard

Format -> Columns - this allows you to set the format of the document to 2 or more columns.

Zoom in Outlook 2010

I have mistakenly increased the zoom in the message window of Outlook 2010.  You can adjust it by holding the Ctrl key and scrolling your mouse wheel.

See also Outlook 2010 reading pane option - want to permanently adjust the zoom setting.

FireBug Break on All Errors

I had a hard time remembering how to enable and disable the Firebug "Break On All Errors" feature.

In the console tab there is a pause button in the upper left if you hover over it you will see it say "Break On All Errors".  Toggling this will enable and disable the feature.

I found some explanation here but it seems a little out of date.

Census Dotmap

From an infosthetics post, I found a census dotmap mapping app.  It was interesting to see my community through a different lens.
